On October 7, 2023, Israel’s border communities faced the unthinkable. Entire families were attacked, homes destroyed, and lives changed forever. These towns and villages — the first line of defense for the nation — stood strong in the face of terror, but at an unimaginable cost.

The Heroes for Israel Project was founded in direct response to this tragedy, with one clear purpose: to protect and strengthen the safety and security of Israel’s border communities.

These are not just places on a map — they are homes, schools, synagogues, and fields where generations of families have lived, farmed, and defended the land. We believe that those who live closest to the threat should be closest to our support.

Kibbutz Kerem Shalom: Courage on the Front Line

Just 100 yards from the Gaza border, and the border of Egypt, Kibbutz Kerem Shalom stood face to face with terror on October 7th, when Hamas terrorists infiltrated the community in a coordinated, brutal assault.
Despite the overwhelming force, the kibbutz’s volunteer security team bravely held the line, engaging the attackers and successfully neutralizing approximately 200 terrorists before military reinforcements could arrive.

Tragically, one IDF soldier, serving as part of the kibbutz's security detail, was killed while heroically defending his comrades and buying precious time for the community to mobilize its defense. His sacrifice, and the courage of every civilian and soldier who stood their ground, saved countless lives that day.

A key factor in their success was the use of strategically placed security cameras in the kibbutz’s solar fields, which allowed defenders to track enemy movements in real time — a powerful reminder of how preparedness and equipment can make the difference between devastation and survival.
This attack is not isolated. It represents the daily reality for Israel’s border communities, who live under constant threat and must be ready to respond in seconds.
Their bravery deserves more than admiration — it deserves action.
Nahal Oz & Kfar Aza:
Stories of Horror and Heroism on the Gaza Border
On October 7, 2023, the quiet agricultural communities of Nahal Oz and Kfar Aza, located just a few kilometers from the Gaza border, became frontlines in the deadliest attack against Israeli civilians in modern history.
In Kfar Aza, Hamas terrorists stormed the kibbutz in the early morning hours. Families were slaughtered in their homes. Entire blocks were burned. The aftermath revealed scenes of unimaginable brutality — including the murder of babies, the elderly, and entire families. The kibbutz lost over 50 residents, including babies and children, and many were taken hostage.
Nahal Oz, another peaceful kibbutz nearby, also came under attack. Despite the heroic efforts of local defenders, terrorists breached the community and inflicted devastating loss. Like in Kfar Aza, residents fought to survive and protect their loved ones as the army raced to respond.

These were not military targets, but homes, schools, and playgrounds. The attacks exposed the terrifying vulnerability of Israel’s border communities and the urgent need to strengthen civilian security, training, and preparedness.
